CSEE&T 2020 moves to a fully virtual event

Dear Members of the CSEE&T community,

After extensive research into the available options and after careful deliberation of all contingencies pertaining to in-person, virtual, or hybrid attendance, including convenience as well as risk for participants, the CSEE&T 2020 organizing committee has decided that it is no longer feasible to host the conference in November with an in-person component. This decision is consistent with our previous announcement to monitor the pandemic development and take further actions if necessary.

The CSEE&T 2020 conference will therefore take place from November 10-12, 2020 completely virtually (Workshop days Nov 9/10).

There are several reasons for this decisions. The most important ones concern participant safety. We have received a large number of requests for remote participation. About half of the presenters are from areas currently considered “at risk” by the European Union and/or Germany (which mostly includes the Americas, but also parts of Asia and even some European countries). Their in-person participation would require participants to undergo a two-week quarantine after arrival and prior participation, if their immigration were to be allowed in the first place. Many presenters are also facing budgetary constraints or are prohibited from traveling.

No one could have respectably predicted these challenges and developments. They are a facet of the time we live in and the year we’re experiencing. Nevertheless, we are committed to hosting the conference and deliver a great experience to our participants.

Nevertheless, we, the organizing team, are dedicated to still provide a collaborative and lively atmosphere that we enjoy about CSEE&T. For this reason, we have conceived a new, innovative format designed to maximize the discussions and collaborations:

  • Rather than sessions with paper presentations followed by Q&A, we will host discussion sessions (similar to panels) comprising thematically similar papers.
  • Paper presenters will be asked to prepare a short 15-20-min video in advance, which, with their approval, we will share on a Youtube Channel.
  • From the pool of presenters in each session, each paper will be assigned a discussant tasked with preparing a summary and questions to initiate the discussion.
  • At the beginning of the session, a brief 1-slide pitch summarizing the paper will be shown to kick-start discussions before discussants take over.
  • At that point, other participants are welcome to join the discussion.

Together with breakout rooms for “coffee break chats,” we anticipate that this will help facilitate a lively conference atmosphere. We hope to see many of you virtually at the conference and, soon, again in person.

Stephan, Bastian, and Bernd

Special Contribution Opportunity for all those Impacted by Coronavirus-related Distance Learning

TL/DR version: We’re calling for special contributions on Ad-Hoc Distance Instruction in Software Engineering. Download the call for papers.

Dear Software Engineering Education & Training community,

We sincerely hope that you all are remaining healthy and safe, as the Coronavirus / COVID-19 Pandemic is challenging the way we live our daily lives. With many communities implementing social distancing and isolation protocols, we hope that you and your loved ones cope sufficiently well.

The current corona-crisis negatively affects human life, business, economies, and you will be the first to agree, changes the way we educate. Universities and schools are forced to rapidly change their curricula and syllabi to account for closed facilities and personal contact restrictions.

In consequence, a vast amount of e-learning materials is being created suddenly and a plethora of courses is offered via distance learning. We are compelled to quickly become experts in facilitating socially distanced instruction as well as research. And for many of us, we do this with a minimum of previous training or experience of educators.

As a community, we can use the experiences gained from this ad-hoc introduction of distance learning in software engineering to improve e-learning and distance learning in the long run and to improve courses in the short run.

Therefore, it is of vital importance to share experiences made and discuss challenges faced to allow other educators to gain important knowledge for their own courses, and to allow other researchers to use these important experiences, findings, and evidence to improve theories and approaches for e-learning and distance learning in software engineering.

It is therefore our extraordinary pleasure off you all this opportunity. We created a special call for papers on Ad-Hoc Distance Instruction in Software Engineering to provide everyone who’s instruction is impacted by the need to suddenly change to distance instruction a platform to share insights. Visit our special web page: call for papers.

Our best wishes go out to all of you. Stay save until we see each other in November.

Conference Postponed in Light of Spreading COVID-19 Pandemic

Dear Software Engineering Education & Training community,

As the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic is gaining an ever tighter grip on our daily lives, we are seeing that many events are cancelled, postponed, or moved. The CSEE&T 2020 organizers, too, are concerned about your health and we want to do our part to keep everyone safe.

It is for this reason that we no longer believe it to be feasible to hold the conference at the end of July 2020. However, cancelling the conference altogether is not an option for us.

After careful deliberation among the entire conference organization, and after consultation with the CSEE&T Conference Series Steering Committee, we have therefore decided to POSTPONE THE CONFERENCE to NOVEMBER 9-12, 2020.

At this point, we anticipate that we will hold an in-person conference at the same location. Nevertheless, given the fluidity of the COVID-19 situation and the uncertainty around future developments, we are going to continually reevaluate the feasibility of an in-person conference in November and further adjustments as necessary. We will not postpone the conference a second time, nor will we cancel the conference.

We understand that many of you have planned their travel for the year already and this move may impact your ability to attend. Please contact us if this is the case.

Postponing the conference comes with new organizational challenges. Many issues such as special conference hotel pricing, details pertaining to the offered program components, and even the social event will have to be renegotiated and planned anew. Please bear with us as we do this and stay tuned for details. These will be posted on the CSEE&T 2020 website.

Despite these ongoing changes, we are committed to keep CSEE&T the premier conference and publication platform for Software Engineering Education & Training research. Therefore, the currently ongoing reviews of the main conference tracks will continue. Since many reviewers are impacted by the COVID-19 situation also, the notification deadline is moved to May 12, 2020, and we ask all authors of submitted papers for their kind patience in this matter. We correspondingly move the deadline for camera-ready copies to the End of July. Rest assured, all papers accepted through peer-review and fit for publication will be published in the forthcoming proceedings.

Our best wishes go out to all of you. We hope you stay safe and healthy and we are looking forward to seeing you in November.

Thank you for your patience.

Stephan, Bernd, and Bastian

Message from the General Chairs regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Dear authors and prospective participants,

as the Coronavirus COVID-19 rapidly spreads throughout Europe and the world, many are secluding themselves to contain the disease and protect those among us who are vulnerable. This is a challenge that is far beyond anything our society has experienced before and requires extreme measures from all of us.

The CSEE&T 2020 organizers are closely monitoring this very fluid situation, which requires daily assessment and reevaluation of the measures we can take to protect you and us. We are in contact with local health officials as well as members of the CSEE&T Steering Committee to decide if, when, and how we can host our event.

Presently, we currently evaluate the alternatives to hosting the conference in Munich in July. We respectfully ask for your patience as developments surrounding COVID-19 unfold and motivate changes in our conference plan. We will post updates on the conference website.

Please stay safe and make healthy choices. Wash your hands, and wipe your keyboard.
